This is the first time I’m using the Lawn Fawn Magic Iris Dies and I’m absolutely in love with it! It’s amazing what this company comes up with! You can get so creative with this die and it only requires cardstock and adhesive to put it all together (and a die cutting machine, of course).
This card was made for a very special mermaid in my life. Her spirit is magical and full of life!
For those of you who are not familiar with the Magic Iris, it’s basically a coverup for a secret message that can be reveals by pulling on a tab.
Have you ever used an ink brayer to create backgrounds? I was completely inspired by Carissa Wiley’s post on “How to Create an Abstract Brayer Background” video to create something similar for an underwater background!
I used Neenah Solar White 80# Cardstock for every element of the card except for the card based which is using Neenah Solar White 110# Cardstock. The background was inked using Ranger Dylusions Small Printing Gel Press Brayer with Concord & 9th’s new ink pads that were released over the Summer in Midnight, Peacock, Oceanside, Aqua Sky, and Sea Glass.
Since this was going to be a mermaid themed card, I wanted to make use of an older Greeting Farm Little Mermaids stamp set and colored them with some Copic Markers:
- Castle (E33, E37, E29)
- Algae (G07)
- Mermaid (R02, YR00, V04, V06, Y11, Y13, Y15, RV04, RV09, RV19,)
I fussy cut the mermaid images and used a Tsukinedo Tuxedo Black Momento marker to outline the cut edges. This allows for a much cleaner look on hand cut images.
Since the Greeting Farm stamp set did not have a birthday sentiment so I dug up an older Simon Says Stamp Birthday Messages stamp set and heat embossed it onto some black cardstock with Versamark Ink and white embossing powder.
To assemble the Magic Iris, I used Tombow Mono Power Bond Adhesive to ensure everything stays put, any permanent adhesive will work just fine. I also used the Magic Iris Add-On Die Cut for the cover piece (inked piece).
Carissa at Sprinkled with Glitter did a “how-to” video on how to assemble the Magic Iris on the Ellen Hutson YouTube channel. I highly recommend this video or the original video by Lawn Fawn if it’s your first time assembling this!
This was such a fun card to make! I hope you give this die set a try!
