I finally found the inspiration to spend some time in my craft room this past weekend! It was so nice to brush the dirt off the creative side of my brain!
I am hooked on making slim cards. I made my first one a few weeks ago and made a few more this week!
Isn’t this just a fun birthday card? I’ve been saving these Little Things Rainbow Sparkle Jewels from Lucy’s Cards for honestly a couple years now and when I saw this OMG die from Ellen Hutson, I knew it would pair perfectly together!
I started by cutting out the background using the Lawn Fawn Large Slimline Rectangle die in my Sizzix Big Shot on some Neenah Classic Crest 110lb Smooth Solar White cardstock. From there, I used the a retired My Favorite Things Geometric Grid Stencil along with the new Concord & 9th Ballet Slipper Ink Pad and a blender brush from Daiso to ink the background.
Brand named blender brushes are quite expensive. I was roaming around a local Daiso, also known as a Japanese dollar store, and came across these facial blending brushes in their cosmetic aisle. I decided to try it out since they were only $2.50 for the small size and $3.50 for the large size. The small size is the one that is comparable to most brands such as Tonic, Simon Says Stamp, Picket Fence, and Honey Bee. I don’t own any blender brushes from these brands so I don’t have anything to compare to, but these facial blending brushes seem to do the job just fine!
Once I finished blending the background, I used the OMG die from Ellen Hutson in my Sizzix Big Shot. For the shaker plastic, I actually used a piece of transparency film I had on hand. You can find these at office supply stores—they are usually used for overhead projectors in classrooms. I can’t recall how I came to possess these, but I’m glad I had them on hand! They are 8 1/2”x11” sheets so you sure get a lot for the price of one box!
To seal it, I used Uline’s Heavy Duty Foam Tape—these are 1/8” thick! Significantly thicker than the 3M Foam Tape and also most cost effective. They super sticky, so in order to cut them down into thinner pieces, I usually reuse the backing of another piece. Otherwise, they stick all over my EK Success Honey Bee Non-Stick Scissors or Tim Holtz Tonic Titanium Snip Scissors. In order to prevent the shaker pieces from sticking to the foam tape, I used EK Success Powder Tool to brush along the sides surrounding the openings.
For the shaker pieces, I used a mixture of Little Things Chunky Clear Iridescent Jewels Mix From Lucy’s Cards, Little Things Rainbow Sparkle Jewels from Lucy’s Cards, Studio Katia Pink Carnation Crystals, and some retired Martha Stewart Crafts Sequins in Lemon Drop.
Before I assembled the card, I cut a piece of Neenah Classic Crest 110lb Smooth Solar White cardstock into 8 1/2”x7”. The Lawn Fawn Large Slimline Rectangle die measures approximately 8 1/2”x3 1/2”. So I was able to assemble the shaker upside down and adhere my Neenah Solar White cardstock to the shaker directly. That way I do not lose any of my shaker pieces or accidentally adhere the top to some of the pieces.
Once the shaker card was assembled, I just needed to finish it with the sentiment. I used the “Happy Birthday: Don’t worry, you’re not that old” stamp from That Thing You Did Essentials by Ellen line with some Versamark Embossing Ink on a piece of spare black cardstock I had in my scraps stash. I then coated the sentiment with some Simon Says Stamp Antique Gold Ultra Fine Embossing Powder and heat embossed it with the Wagner Precision Heat Tool (this link is for the newer model, but I have an older version). I trimmed down and cut angles on the sentiment and adhered it on top of the shaker using more Uline’s Heavy Duty Foam Tape.
And viola—another elegant slimline/slim card completed!
